Winged jewels

It is impossible to imagine anything so lovely as these little Humming Birds, their variety and the extraordinary brilliancy of their colours.

Another Green-throated carib (Eulampis holosericeus). You can’t see its other colours because of the leaf in the foreground, but I actually love this photo.. because of that leaf. It’s sooo greeen…

They poise themselves in the air, we hear not the humming of the wings, but we can almost fancy there is a voice in that beauty

Antillean crested hummingbird (Orthorhyncus cristatus), in a most inelegant moment: preening. 🙂

Antillean crested hummingbird (Orthorhyncus cristatus), one of my favourite photos of this little bird. I absolutely loved the crest, and how you could see it from one direction but..not from the other!

As our bodies are mostly made of water, I’d rather be hungry than thirsty. And as love is mostly made up of sugar water, I’d rather be a hummingbird caged in your heart.

Can you see it? The purple-throated Carib (Eulampis jugularis), hiding in plain sight?

Better 🙂 (still the purple-throated Carib (Eulampis jugularis))

As with the crested, here the purple throat isn’t always obvious… (Purple-throated Carib (Eulampis jugularis), Martinique)

Two Purple-throated Caribs (Eulampis jugularis), Martinique

I have wasted my life with mineralogy, which has led to nothing. Had I devoted myself to birds, their life and plumage, I might have produced something myself worth doing. If I could only have seen a humming-bird fly, it would have been an epoch in my life.

My favourite “iridescence” series with the Purple-throated Carib (Eulampis jugularis)…

.. pretty cool, huh?

He who binds to himself a joy,

does the winged life destroy.

But he who kisses the joy as it flies,

Lives in eternity’s sunrise.
